All of the ‘Divine Nine,’ as they are nicknamed, NPHC organizations are represented on Michigan State’s campus. The fraternity consists of over 100 undergraduate.

Members are sometimes referred to as Iotas, Centaurs, Outlaws or Thetaman. The fraternity may be relatively young, but has already amassed an impressive membership of over 30,000 collegiate members. While the fraternitys membership is comprised primarily of African-Americans, membership is not restricted by race, creed, or national origin. Iota Phi Theta is a historically African-American fraternity the was founded in 1963 on the campus of Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland. The scope of the organization extends throughout the nation, from California to New York from Wyoming to Florida and from Wisconsin to our international chapters.The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is composed of the nine largest historically African-American Greek-letter organizations. Today, Iota Phi Theta exists as nationally incorporated social/service fraternity which continues to remain true to the original aims of its founders. The first steps toward moving the Fraternity from a regional to a more national scope were taken with the creation of Upsilon Chapter (Southern Illinois University) in 1974. Today, Iota Phi Theta® consists of over 300 chapters located in 40 States, the District of Columbia and internationally in the Republic of Korea, Japan and Colombia, South America. Today, Iota Phi Theta consists of over 300 chapters located in 40 States as well Japan, Korea, and the Bahamas. Following Alpha Phi Alpha - the first Black Greek-lettered fraternity, which was founded at Cornell University in 1906 - eight other organizations followed. The next regional expansion occurred in 1983 with the establishment of the Alpha Chi (San Francisco State University) and Xi Omega (San Francisco Alumni) chapters in California. These chapters created the framework for the growth and development of the organization in the Northeast, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest Regions of the country.

It was also during this period that the Fraternity's first 4 Graduate chapters were formed: Alpha Omega (Baltimore, MD, 1965), Beta Omega (Washington, DC, 1970), Gamma Omega (Hampton, VA, 1973), and Delta Omega (Boston, MA, 1973).
